Tips and Tricks to Growing Zucchini

I love zucchini because you can use it for many dishes such as stir-fries or lasagna, cookies and bread, and so much more. One of the tastiest ways to eat zucchini is fried and dipped in ranch. Is it the healthiest? No, but it sure tastes incredible! Zucchini is so easy to grow and grows in abundance that you may get to the point of giving it away!

You can always start growing zucchini seeds indoors right before spring, then transfer them to your garden after the signs of the last frost. Otherwise, start from a plant directly into your outdoor garden.

Good Soil Helps Grow Zucchini

Aim for fertile, well-drained soil in full sun for optimal production of your zucchini. Tricks to growing zucchini need warm weather and lots of sunshine to grow!

Spacing Zucchini in the Garden

When you plant, try to aim for 2 to 4 feet apart from each plant. They need to have air circulation to help prevent disease and rot. A great option is to plant zucchini on a low hill! Aim for around 6-12 inches on the high and anywhere from 12-24 inches wide.

Warm Weather for Growing Zucchini

Zucchini likes warm soil, the optimal temperature is 70 degrees. They can survive in colder temperatures, but observe if you experience chilly nights.

Watering Your Zucchini

Try to water evenly, and water more if it is sweltering outside. The critical time for watering is during bud development and flowering. I recommend checking your plants daily to ensure they are not drying out.

Keep Away From Yellow Squash and Cucumbers

Make sure if you plant zucchini, it's far away from cucumbers and yellow squash, or they will cross-pollinate, leaving you with a different take on zucchini! They both vine out and take up the right amount of room, so ensure they stay away from each other.

Pick Your Zucchini Early

Zucchini produces a lot, and you want to ensure you pick them at the right size - don't let them get super big. Having them a medium-size or even small, you'll find those to have the best flavor.

Blossom End Rot

Some zucchini ends up with what is called blossom end rot.  It looks like a small bruise on the blossoms or end of the fruit and softens and gets darker in color. This dark color is caused by a lack of calcium in the soil, over-fertilization, root damage, poor dirt, etc. Calcium is necessary for these plants, so make sure to buy calcium to sprinkle on the soil or fertilizer that has it in it.

Squash Bugs

Some plants can become infested with squash bugs. Make sure to take care of them before they get out of hand.  You can also dust your plants with Diatomaceous earth; it contains no toxic poisons and works great at keeping these pesky bugs at bay. Lightly sprinkle over your crop.
